Late Halloween Post

This post is actually about my knitting but the knitting was a Doctor Who scarf that I promised to make for middle child (also known as tall, dark and kilted). I promised to have this finished for Halloween of 2007.
So either this is a very late post or life got in the way and I just finished it in time for this Halloween.

I offered to make the scarf exactly like the pattern for any of the scarves actually used on the series (we are going way back to Tom Baker Doctor Who). But son said no, he didn't want an exact replica - he wanted his to be unique.

At one point in time I had it six foot long but decided to rip it out and start over. I felt it needed to be a little narrower (it was about 16 inches wide) and it needed to be on smaller needles - it was way too open. Worsted weight on a size 10.5 wasn't working for me.
As usual when I rip out a huge project, I didn't want to go back to it, so it sat for a long while with son frequently asking - mom, where's my scarf.
I did restart it in time for last Christmas but didn't finish it before January when my world went to pieces.
So I told son that I would get it finished for this Halloween. I ripped everything I had redone out again and started over for the last time.
Son wanted it to be all the colors in the world, all weights and fibers. What a great way to use up stash. I did stick with worsted and sport weight that I doubled when I knit it. I also stayed with all washable yarns although he hasn't ever ruined a wool item by washing it.
I also decided to go through the Barbara Walker books and a calender of stitches and a book of reversible stitches and be creative. I got to try dozens znd dozens of new as well as familiar stitch patterns.
Son saw me working on it and reminded me it had to have lots of pockets. It has lots of pockets, it has 6 or 7 or 8 pockets. One for drumsticks, a watch pocket for a pocket watch hidden inside another pocket, a phone pocket, a pocket for a paperback book, a huge pocket for jelly bellies, a 3 pockets for pens and his sonic screwdriver, a pocket for keys, the double knitted elks - that's another pocket. Probably more that I don't remember because everytime son stopped by to check on the scarf, I would show him all the secret and not so secret pockets and he would say - more pockets mom.
The scarf is only 17 feet long and Doctor Who's scarf is supposed to be twenty feet or longer. But I was running out of time to get it finished for Halloween and to also get myself ready to go on a trip.
I know you get to see a lot of pictures of the really cute white thing of Ritza's so I thought I would throw in a picture of my even cuter white things. They have their short short summer hair cut because country dogs need a shorter haircut than city dogs.

Wow. Just WOW! That is the epitome of perseverance and a mother's love. It is truly a great and enviable scarf.

My word verification is "kinged" which is so appropriate for your son wearing his Dr. Who scarf.
