Pentagon Hat

One of two hat types I have (had) not yet knit from 45 Fine and Fanciful Hats by Anna Zilboorg.  This one was knit in just one color instead of the stranded color work the book calls for because I needed to get it done super quick.  It took about an evening to knit.

I love it but I think it either should have been knit stranded or knit on a smaller needle.  It was fine while I was knitting it, but after I washed the hat for blocking it became a bit too floppy for me.  Live and learn.

This was a sample for theater knitting.  It looks like this style has been rejected but that's ok.  Now I have another hat for myself.  I'm going to need warm headwear next time I visit Dena.

New Tatted Shuttles!

This one was made using the Grape Punch thread that Lace Lovin' Librarian sent me (thank you!).  It came out darker, which was expected and I think I like the thread better this way.

This was made from Lizbeth Blue River Glades which is my new favorite color thread.  It was meant to replace the shuttle made with blues that I lost but I think it's much prettier.  We'll have to see if I can use the pick or not - I am usually ok with them on small shuttles, but these are pretty large.

This was some thread that came from Mom's stash - we found it in the storage unit when we sorted that stuff out.  It may have been Mom's or may have been her mother's, I don't know (maybe she'll chime in and tell us?).  Anyway, I had to remove the outside of the ball because the outside thread was smoke damaged but the inside didn't seem to be too brittle or break.  I really love how it came out in the shuttle.  I might have to share the ball with Dena so she can make a shuttle from it too.

Remembering Gina, Can you help?

I meant to post this on Friday, but held out hope till the very last that I would be able to do what I wanted to without help.  I've only been tatting for about two years and I've learned so much in that time - mostly through the helpful people I've met in the online tatting blog community.  Gina was very kind to me.  Anytime I had a question and posed it on my blog or as a comment on her blog or even someone else's blog she would email me with the answer.  I never met her, but I have dozens of emails from her.

I have often looked at her patterns and thought "I want to tat that."  Usually, the pattern has some technique that I haven't learned yet, so I set out to learn it meaning to come back to Gina's pattern.  I still want to tat her patterns, but now I cannot get at them.  Her Keep and Share account has exceeded bandwidth and no patterns can be accessed.  Is there anyone who can help me get copies of some of them so I can tat a tribute to her?

Thanks in advance.

Roses Progress

It was a very good day . . .

Yesterday was my birthday.  I turned old.  Well, older anyway.
But it was a lovely day.
My friend took me out for lunch to our regular restaurant - everyone knows us there.  She announced to everyone that it was my birthday so they all wished me happy birthday several times, we discussed who was older than me (only the bartender) and they gave me Nutilla as a birthday cake (no candle and no singing, thankfully).

I got flowers in a box delivered by UPS.  That's a first for me.  Hubby decided that he would have done better going to Costco and getting them there, but these are nice.  I love the little mini roses on each side and I love how there are several different colors.

In the afternoon, Dena, Mom and I had a birthday party via Oovoo - that was a lot of fun.  Girl Far From Home joined us for a while too.

Mom gave me this very cool book.  I'm going to have to knit that red sweater on the cover for Girl Far From Home.  I had been looking at this book before I got it and thinking that it might be something I needed, so I was thrilled to get it and find out it IS something I needed.  There is a cape that I will knit for Mom and a vest that I want to knit for myself.  It's a really nice book with really cool patterns.

Dena gave me this mitten and glove book - Girl Far From Home has already requested a pair of gloves.  (I've never knit gloves before . . .too many fingers.)  I think I might have all of Annemore Sundbo's books and if I don't, I need whichever ones I don't have.  I love her books.

Dena also gave me knives - colorful knives - and they really are sharper than snot (Dena's words).  I accidentally cut one of my fingernails with one of the knives - they cut fingernails like butter!

And Dena gave me Tatting Talk A Self Improvement Guide for Tatters and Tatting Online which is a ton of patterns from Geogia's online tatting course.  See the lovely curly bubinga tatting shuttle?  Dena gave me that too.  I knit the little sock to keep it safe and pretty.  Dena and I are going to meet online on Mondays and work our way through both books - I can't wait!

Hubby gave me a new camera.  My old camera works and is pretty darn good as cameras go, but it is old. That Other Girl was insistent that he get me a new camera, but at least partly because she wants my old camera.  This new one takes different lenses and I had thought I wanted one of the kits that come with more than one lens.  Then last night, after we went out and had a fabulous dinner (and quite a lot of wine) I remembered that my old film camera already had a bunch of lenses.  Hubby said they'd never fit the new camera but I assured him that they still sell those same lenses and they would absolutely fit.  The only difference between the new lenses and the old is the Image Stabilization technology that we have now and didn't have then.  Yep, all my old lenses fit so I have quite a selection!
(The candle in the recycled wine bottle, rosemary citrus scent, was a gift from my lunchtime buddy.)

The dog and Hubby were both relatively patient while I played with the new camera.  I still have a lot to learn about how to work it, but it's going to be a good one.

Thanks everyone for making my birthday so much fun.  Getting old isn't that bad after all!

Smell the Roses

Dena and I are starting another knit along today.  We both ordered the Smell the Roses shawl club from The Unique Sheep and our packages arrived the other day.  We got together on Oovoo and cast on today.
This is my kit - I got the silver-gray rose.

This is Dena's kit - she got the orange rose.

She likes my silver-gray rose better and I like the orange better, so we are going to trade those.  The yarns are all the same color - my green and yellow hank is already wound into a ball so it looks different.  This yarn is really gorgeous stuff called Tinsel Toes.  It's 50% merino and 50% tencel so it has a lovely shine and drape to it.  We are both hoping it's going to be easier to work with than the Madeline Tosh Merino Lite - couldn't be worse.

More pics as we progress . . . .

Sothia Complete

This is my Sothia Shawl complete and blocked.  The pattern lists it as a wide, shallow triangle shawl, but that's not what I would call it at all.   The wings wrap around your shoulders and help keep it on without tying or a shawl pin.  I wore it yesterday afternoon and really like the way it stays without constantly slipping.  I prefer not to have a shawl tied or pinned across my chest.

So now it's on to other things!
